The film is adapted from Henry James’ novella “The Beast in the Jungle” and is set it in the near future, where artificial intelligence reigns supreme and emotions are seen as dangerous. It follows Gabrielle (Seydoux) who is haunted by an irrational fear and is being told that she must purify her DNA to heal from past traumas to get a proper job. Through the process, Gabrielle revisits past lives and immerses herself in buried memories from 1910 and 2014, where she reunites with Louis (MacKay), her great love. While their bond has transcended lifetimes and eras, it’s also at the root of her premonition that something tragic will happen.
The cast is completed by Guslagie Malanda, Dasha Nekrasova, Martin Scali, Élina Löwensohn, Marta Hoskins, Julia Faure, Kester Lovelace, Félicien Pinot and Laurent Lacote. The film is a Les Films du Bélier, My New Picture and Sons of Manual Production, and is produced by Justin Taurand and Bertrand Bonello.
Following its Venice premiere, the movie went on to play at the Toronto International Film Festival, and had its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival in its main slate.
